NOTES: Swanson Lands USAC-CRA Ride

by Adam Fenwick

INDIANAPOLIS — Moose Racing confirmed on Friday that Jake Swanson will take over the No. 92 entry on the AMSOIL USAC-CRA Sprint Car Series tour in 2014.
The deal was ironed out over lunch Friday at the PRI Trade Show at the Indiana Convention Center.
Swanson, a 20-year-old native of Anaheim, Calif., scored one victory and finished second in the 2013 USAC Western Midget Series standings. He’ll replace David Cardey in the Moose Racing entry after Cardey opted to retire from sprint car racing following the season.
The team is based in Huntington Beach, Calif., and owned by husband and wife team of Tom and Laurie Sertich. The couple has been involved in motorsports as car owners for more than 20 years.
In addition to the signing of Swanson, the Sertichs have also signed a deal to become dealers for Precise Racing on the West Coast. Precise Racing sells parts and tires for a variety of racing genres, ranging from sprint cars to drag racing.

• 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan joked today during the Chip Ganassi Racing press conference about the size of his nose on the Borg-Warner Trophy.
“I really didn’t care much how my face was going to look on that trophy as long as it was going to be there,” Kanaan said. “I even told the artist if he just wanted to just put a nose in there and my name it was going to be OK.”
• Damion Gardner, who last month locked up the AMSOIL USAC-CRA Sprint Car Series championship, said on Friday that he is planning on taking another crack at the 200 mph barrier in his Green Demon sprint car at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats in August of 2014. He reached a top speed of 194.27 mph earlier this year in his initial trip to the Salt Flats.
• Schmidt Peterson Racing 20-year-old English racer Jack Harvey to compete in the Indy Lights Series beginning in 2014. Harvey, who in 2013 was the highest finishing rookie in Europe’s GP3 Series, will have support from the Racing Steps Foundation.
“Everything was looking good for me in Europe and I certainly would have continued working on that path, but the Racing Steps Foundation, which manages my career, and I both decided that we wanted to try to tackle the U.S.,” Harvey said. “Schmidt Peterson Motorsports doesn’t need any introduction with their winning history in Indy Lights. We always try to associate ourselves with winners, which is exactly what this team has proven itself to be.”
